Antique or Reproduction…..

Earlier this week I was perusing the last issue (September/October 2009) of Southern Accents. (sniff, sniff) I love this magazine, I will really miss it! As I do when reading almost all magazines, I did so while eating lunch and answering emails, so I wasn’t totally paying attention to the articles. That was until I stumbled upon a great short article about antique Quartetto Tables, my they were stunning! The article highlighted Trace Mayer Antiques, so I shot off an email to Trace. I just had to know a little more about these beauties and of course obtain a jpeg to share with my blog readers!
Well Trace promptly returned a very pleasant email…….. basically, but nicely she said…….No pictures were to be had, the tables showcased were Sotherby’s. She forwarded a few additional tables but they didn’t hold a candle to the ones in the magazine. I was majorly bummed! Let’s face it Sotherby’s was certainly out of my price range!
Antiques have there place, but truthfully probably not in my home. Everything I purchase is already distressed, that way the kids, the dog and yes the prince my husband can’t do much harm. These quartetto tables would be perfect in my living room, so the search began for quartetto tables. Although to be honest I didn’t have to look far. Theodore Alexander, one of my favorite furniture manufactures has one of the nicest selections of antique reproductions! There they were …….. quartetto tables not just one or two styles but 15 different styles!

The Theodore Alexander line has graced our showroom now for almost 10 years, when I look back through the photos of projects I have completed almost every home has been touched by a piece of Theo ………if not many pieces! What about your home, does it need a touch of Theo?

Everyone is a Couch Potato some days!

It was a rainy, cold day on Saturday here in Connecticut. The perfect day to rent a couple of movies and lounge …….. which is exactly what the kids and I did all afternoon.
It is a precious thing when your teenage daughter and preteen son are agreeable to an afternoon with mom! As the credits ran on the last video, Joey jumped up and announce he was heading into the basement to try out his new Tony Hawk Game and Ashley was already texting her friends about plans for the evening.
Easy come, easy go!
I picked up the popcorn bowls and folded the throw on the sofa, then headed to the mudroom closet for the vacuum. With the yucky weather I skipped the gym that morning, so my workout was going to do double time! Not only would I get my physical workout but my family room was in for one too! I was off to keep my furniture in shape! To be honest I barely broke a sweat doing this, please don’t tell Kris ……… with that said there are no excuses on why you can’t keep your upholstery in great shape too!
Here is your check list!
Upholstery
Fabric
It is best to obtain manufactures recommended cleaning instructions when you purchase your sofa or chair. Still following these simple steps on a regular basis will keep your upholstery in beautiful shape!
  • Pull cushions off and vacuum deck of furniture making sure to get into corners …. sometimes there’s a bonus to be had! Once my prince left me a $5.00 tip, I treated myself to a latte!
  • Vacuum cushions, backs and outside weekly if possible
  • Rotate or at very least flip the cushions for even wear
  • Spot clean stains (again according to manufactures directions) immediately
  • Use arm covers when possible.
  • Refrain from having Fito join you on your favorite sofa or chair. As lovable as Fito is his claws are damaging.
  • At least once a year get under that sofa or chair and vacuum the under fabric of the piece.
Leather
  • Clean up spills immediately, do not let a spill dry.
  • Pull cushions off and vacuum deck of furniture making sure to get into corners ….
  • Dust leather, do not use saddle soap, cleaning solvents, furniture polish…….basically just dust it! If you have a small dried spill you can use a little bit of ivory soap on a warm sponge, but dry after the spill is removed.
  • Leather cushions can’t be flipped, leather needs to breath so the bottoms of the cushions are usually a fabric. Do although, rotate the cushions if possible.
  • Also if possible keep Garfield off the leather, especially if he has claws!
  • Also once a year get under the piece and vacuum the under side.sofa-vacumm
If you can get someone else to do this workout, give yourself the day off! Looks to me like the smart gal here took my advice, hhmm I think she’s on to something!
With all furniture protect it from sunlight. The sun rays are damaging in three ways, ‘light’, ‘heat’ & ‘UV’ rays. So safeguard your furnishings with window shades, draperies or additional window tinting.
Just for the record I did take the weekend off from the gym (um, yeah I skipped Sunday too!) but fear not Monday came and I was back in the saddle.

Blindsided!

Wow! That exercise ball blindsided me last week. I never expected one blue ball to cause so much pain! Still I keep going back!
But being blindsided started me thinking about your workout for the house ……. and window
treatments….. blinds, draperies and shades all need a quick work out to stay in great shape!
Blinds are easy to keep looking in prime condition, mainly keeping up with weekly dusting will diminish the need for regular vigorous cleaning! Still the time will come….
Most metal blinds are aluminum, so using the bathtub for you mini gym is a great solution to rid built-up grime.soapy-water
  • Fill your bathtub with warm water and ‘Mr. Clean’ or your favorite dish washing detergent.
  • Use a small sponge to wash vanes, careful not to bend them.
  • Allow water to drain and turn on shower head to rinse thoroughly
  • Hang blinds outside on clothesline or fold over a deck railing.

For wood blinds

  • Simply wipe down with a damp sponge
  • Avoid submersing in a tub of warm water unless the blind is a synthetic with faux wood graining.

Roller shades, most are made from a synthetic material such as vinyl or polyester.

  • Wipe shade down with a dampened soft cloth
  • Again a mixture of warm water and dish washing detergent works best
  • Always test material for color fastness before the cleaning workout, think of it as your stretching warm up
Draperies………. know what your draperies are constructed of, some can be washed but many need to be dry cleaned. Avoid over washing or dry cleaning if possible. Simple weekly vacuuming with the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner will keep them fresh!
Tomorrow I return to the gym, I’ll see if the exercise ball and I will meet up for a rendezvous. There’s no possiblity I can be sucker punched now…….Although who knows what Kris has in store for me tomorrow!

No Longer the Wreck Deck!

The Peck-Deck felt like human torture the first time I sat at that machine. Kris was smiling ear to ear as always counting down the reps and cheering me on as I thought my muscles were going to rip right off their bones! Still to Kris’s credit, it is getting easier each time I sit at the machine, that is until she raises the weight again! Gotta love her!
Saturday Morning as the weight increased I took out my famous imaginary black sharpie and started rhyming words with ‘peck’ ……attempting again to keep my mind off the burn!peck-deck-machine-for-chest-workout1

Hhhhmmm………deck and wreck, great next workout I thought!
Deck maintenance will definitely keep you from a wrecked deck! I promise if you make deck maintenance part of your regular house workout routine you won’t need a imaginary black sharpie to get through the project!
Grab your ‘work out attire’ ……..work gloves, rubber gloves, sunscreen if needed and safety glasses and lets get started on the wreck deck workout!
  • Examine the deck for any soft rotted deck boards including railings, floor boards, joists and fascia. Replace any rotted, dangerously split or horribly warped boards. cleaning-supplies-for-a-deckRotted boards are easy to find, just give the wood a gentle stab with a screw driver or awl……..if it sinks, well the board is sunk~be ready to replace that board! Once the inspection is complete and repairs made, you are ready to dive in!
  • Don the safety glasses and prepare to remove any loose paint or stain
  • With your gloves on use a flat paint scrapper to remove any loose stain or paint. What doesn’t come off with scraping you’ll need to sand.
  • Now clean your deck! Preferably with an oxygen bleached base cleaner…this will remove dirt, grime, mildew and greying that occurred from sun damage and age.
  • Protect surrounding landscaping with drop cloths ……… the cleaner can be damaging to your precious plant life!
  • Mix cleaner according to manufactures instructions, wear glove and eye protection.
  • Apply cleaner to the deck work in smaller sections giving the cleanser time to work, again follow the instructions from the manufacture …….. they do know what they are talking about! Allowing the product to do its job will make your job easier.
  • When the cleanser has worked for its suggested time take a stiff broom to scrub the deck clean. Follow the grain of the wood.
  • Rinse and repeat until the entire deck is clean
  • Your deck should dry for 24 hours before applying new stain or paint, also keep an eye to the sky (or your local weather channel) it best to not stain just before it rains…..most stains take 2 to 4 hours to dry.
  • When staining or painting your deck, start with your railing and work you way down to the deck. This will keep your clean up with drips from the railings & spindles on the old deck finish not the new one!
  • I like to leave the paint or stain to cure for a couple days before I return the patio furniture to the deck.

Don’t Drop the Ball!

Kris introduced the Yoga Ball this morning during my workout. I hopped off the treadmill feeling great and headed right over to the machines ready to work out my legs! Until I was intercepted ………….by bubbly, bright Kris smiling ear to ear “Ready?!” and she tossed (more like threw) a 24″+ ball right at my chest.
First off how could anyone be so happy at 6:15 am?
Secondly what the heck was I going to do with an over sized kick ball?
……….I should know better than to ask such questions.
abs-exercises-6Kris laid out a mat and smiled “on your back!” She continued with her list of instructions, “grab the ball with your legs, lift up your tush, squeeze your stomach and lift, lift, lift ………..15 times!” Rest (thank God!) then I heard “Again”. As I struggled to balance myself, blink the sweat out of my eyes and just try to get through the next set, I realized that ‘dropping the ball’ is something we should not to do with our own homes!
Keep that ball up there……..let’s start with an easy ball!
Gutters! I know cleaning the gutters can be worse than an ab workout on the ball!
Keeping your gutters and down spouts clean will protect your home from many potentially debilitating problems. Gutters keep water directed away from your foundation, preventing basements from flooding. When gutters are filled with debris they become heavy and can pull away from the fascia creating a headache to fix! Here in Connecticut during the winter months, if your gutters can’t drain you will be a victim to ice dams and gutters really ripping off the fascia! I guess gutters are pretty important! So what is the best way to maintain them?
  • Hire a professional if you aren’t comfortable or stable on a ladder or roof. Saftey First!
  • Gutters should be cleaned twice a year. Spring & Fall
  • You can access the gutter from the roof if the pitch isn’t too steep or from a ladder. If you use a ladder that leans against the gutter make sure you protect the gutter with a short (18″-24″) 2X4 scrap piece of lumber inside the gutter. This will prevent the gutter from crushing. You can also simply use a ladder standoff.cleaning-gutters
  • Arm yourself with heavy work gloves. The edges of the gutters can be very sharp not to mention its an ugly, messy job! I don’t like to mess up my nails!
  • Scoop out loose debris working away from the down spout drop into a bucket hanging on your ladder. I use a garden trowel for the scooping!
  • Spray out the gutter with a high pressure nozzle on then end of garden hose working your way back toward the down spout. If you thought the step above was messy……well this one is worse. Protect your eyes, gunk is going to fly everywhere! Try not to get it all over your house! You’ll be making more work for yourself.
  • If you have gutter slime caked in the bottom of the gutter you may need to use a scrub brush to work it clean then rinse again.
  • If all goes well, the water will run freely down the down spout!
  • If the water is bubbling up at the end of the gutter downspout and not freely flowing, try spraying the hose directly down the down spout to work free the clog. If you day just isn’t going your way and its still backed up…. use a plumbers auger (snake) to work the clog free!

No Drain, No Gain!

I have entered the second week of my new work-out schedule. I may not be smiling ear to ear as my friend ‘Hercules the House’ is, but I’m definitely beginning to feel results!
So as I promised, it is time to whip your home into shape! Just as my trainer Kris took it easy on me in the beginning of my training, I plan to do the same with you and your house.
Your bathrooms are the easiest ans smallest project to kick off your new house work out! Just like our bodies the more you’ve let it go the more work you will have ahead of you…………..
Shower enclosures need to look great at all times! After all its one of the first things that greets you each morning!
  • Mineral build up on glass doors can be removed with white vinegar. if build up is too heavy consider a harsher cleaner specifically for lime & mineral build up. Always try these products in an inconspicuous area before you drive in completely.
  • Replace vinyl shower curtain liners every 6 months or sooner if build up of mildew and scum is excessive.

Floor & wall tile, nothing is worse than bathroom tile that’s dingy or worse yet

  • Clean tile with mild and ammonia free, non abrasive cleanser
  • Clean grout including grout that may have developed mold build up 3/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of hot water. Gently scrub with a small scrub brush. Once grout is clean and dry seal with clear concert stain or grout sealer. If the grout can not be cleaned the grout should be removed and the entire wall or floor re-grouted (this could be a tough job and may not be a great warm up for your work out!)

Lime rings on your toilet will make you look like a poor house keeper

  • Use a pumice stone or small piece of brick and rub gently along the lime line. This will not scratch the toilet as the porcelain is harder than the brick or pumice stone.
  • Take the seat off occasionally and clean well underneath the seat fasteners areas and wash the cones that protect the bolts to the floor.
  • Now you’re ready to use your favorite anti-bacterial bleach product for a sparkling Toiddy.

Caulk only creates a fresh clean appearance if it’s in good shape. Not to mention, cracked, crumbling and peeling caulk usually leads to leaks and all kinds of future headaches!

  • Scrape away old caulk with a putty knife
  • Make sure area is dry and clean
  • Cut tip of caulk tube to appropriate size, the bead of caulk made by the tip should fill the crack or seam
  • Run a bead of caulk along the crack or seam
  • Drag a wet finger tip over the bead to smooth the caulk into the joint. Wipe excess caulk on a wet rag.

Not bad huh? As long as you ventilate the bathroom well you shouldn’t even feel the burn! Well, no burn in your eyes at least! Your arms on the other hand, well they may be sore. If you are ambitious enough to complete this all in one Saturday morning, then treat yourself to some new bath towels or a few accessories. It’s no different than treating myself to a new pair of 7 Jeans when I get to my ideal physical shape! Heck, maybe I’ll add a great pair of black stiletto boots too!

I started a gym membership Monday. After much self examination I came to the realization that yeah……… if I don’t start taking better care of myself I’m going to start falling apart at the seams. It’s now Thursday, Kris (my informal personal trainer) has been workin’ me hard and I’m ‘feeling the burn’! I know this will eventually level off, but I gotta say I wince each time I see a set of stairs……they are a killer to climb right now.

My warm up is the treadmill. It is amazing to me what runs through my head while I’m on a treadmill for 20 minutes. I’ve never been one for a idle mind, its always racing! So to take my mind off the awful burning in my thighs I started thinking …… I took out my imaginary black sharpie and started making a list in my head. Crazy I know but I love black sharpies!

  • School starts this week, buy fresh blueberries for the pancakes
  • Kids will be out of the house so clean the oven
  • Order Ashley’s contacts
  • Check on the replacement bases for the front porch columns, need to get those installed and painted before it gets too cold
  • Call the chimney sweep its time to have the flues clean and checked
  • Which reminds me when was the last time I cleaned the dryer vent?
  • Remember to double check the bus schedule
  • Did Joe re caulk the kids bathroom tub?~better ask him about that tonight
  • Lemon Oil the kitchen cabinets
  • Mornings are cooler, Joey may need a new fleece jacket
  • Paint the beadboard in the mudroom ……… didn’t I just do that?
  • Wash windows ………..
  • Powerwash the house (do the power washing before the windows!)
  • Order fresh mulch for the gardens….
  • Did I remember sandwich bags for lunches?
  • Deadhead the perennials and buy mums to freshen up the gardens
  • Help Ash compile applications for college
  • Take the down comforters to the dry cleaners
  • Remind Joe to finish FAFSA paperwork
  • Put second coat of stain on deck …….. preferably before the 9.12 breakfast
  • Paint porch trim
  • Pick tomatoes for another batch of sauce
  • Did I return that email to Ed yesterday about NY?
  • Rotate the rugs
  • Have the driveway re-graded, again!
  • Clean gutters
  • Buy new work boots
As the treadmill slowed, I began reviewing the list I had made. I came to the realization that much of the list included things I needed to do to keep my house in shape! Naturally my brain works differently than most, I wondered if Kris can put together a workout to keep me in great physical shape, why couldn’t I do the same for our homes?

So, there it was my September Blog path! Coming up next month I will bring you ideas on how to keep your house in great shape. It takes work, time and dedication to maintain a good body, but once you get into a routine it becomes second nature, you’ll find the same with your home!

Dress your spaces in red!

Wow! Great minds think a like! I love red, I am constantly incorporating it into my designs. It looks like I’m not alone, red was my runner up in my unofficial ‘favorite color’ poll conducted on Twitter & Facebook last month.
So what is it about Red that is so …… electrifying?!
Well, the psychology of red is that it has been associated with raising your heart rate and at times even giving the sensation that you are ‘out of breath’. That explains why my prince gives red roses when he’s in the dog house, how could I stay mad if he makes my heart skip a beat! Red also has been associated with increasing your appetite, that is why many restaurants use red, and frankly why the walls of my first dining room were red~I needed all the help I could get back then! With design, red can be used as the ‘featured’ color in a space although for many it is better as a great accent!
cropped-green-seg-photoTake for example this set I designed for our local ABC affiliate WTNH’s CT Style. The set was designed to be soothing, restful and neutral. The overall palette of the space was predominately browns and beige’s, textures were mixed up a bit for interest and subtle patterns wer used, but let us speak frankly ……….. it lacked a stimulation! So just as Bill preaches dress in red, so I preach add a touch of red!
So, how do you add a little red or excitement to a space without over doing it?
  1. Use one bold red piece, as I did with the painting behind the sofa in this set. It is your first immediate punch of red, it is large, bold and great unexpected subject matter. red-and-accents
  2. Then sew the room together with red. Follow my yellow ‘thread’ on the picture to see how I stitched this set together
  3. Use various reds, the coffee table books in red are three different shades of red.
  4. Mix up your patterns. The throw over the back of the sofa is solid but the pillow is a small geometric pattern. The mini rose bush offers it’s own little pattern next to a solid red ceramic apple.
  5. Balance the textured red. The red metal siding in the painting offers a modeled red mass, I have repeated the feeling in the large jar under the table of fabrics.

Using red is fun! If red scares you start off small, put that bouquet of red roses in the center of your blue family room, add a red frame and red candle, then watch the room come to life! I think I’ll pick up a dozen red roses tonight …….. its been years since I’ve received some!…… Guess that’s a good thing, it means Joe hasn’t been in the dog house in a long, long time! :-)
